Sun You
뉴욕을 기반으로 활동하는 선 유Sun You는 공예와 미술 간의 경계를 허무는 작업을 해오고 있다. 그는 일본식 꽃꽂이에서 영감 받은 작은 탁상용 조각들과 벽면에 부착하거나 바닥에 놓이는 오브제들로 구성된 설치 작업을 통해 일상의 아름다움과 유동적이고 불완전한 관계에 대해 이야기한다. 학생이나 공예 애호가들이 모형 제작을 위해 사용하는 스컬피(sculpey, 오븐용 점토)를 밀어 오븐에 구워 만든 조형물과 실내 장식 몰딩으로 구성된 작품은 화이트 큐브 안의 낮은 좌대 위에 설치됨으로서 카페트나 텍스타일의 장식성과 예술작품으로서의 성격을 함께 드러낸다. 탁상용 조각과 벽면에 부착된 조각들을 구성하고 있는 일상적인 사물들은 작품 안에 어우러지면서 예기치 않은 충돌 혹은 조화로움을 발생시키는데, 여기서 진지함과 유희를 오가는 작가의 세련된 감각이 빛을 발한다. 작품을 구성하는 이러한 일상적 사물들은 오직 자석과 중력으로만 연결되어 아슬아슬한 긴장감을 발생시킨다. 안정과 불안정을 오가는 드라마틱한 상황은 우리의 사소한 일상 가운데 생겨나는 모든 관계들에 대해 생각해 보도록 이끌 것이다.
